The Ghosts of Nothing
In Memory of Johnny B. Goode – World Tour of Abandoned Gaol-Houses 2016/2017
Featuring Laura Purcell at The Tench, Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site (Hobart, Tasmania, Australia).
Saturday 18 November 2017 6pm

The Ghosts of Nothing

The Tench, as it was known by its inhabitants, was the convict prisoners' barracks for Hobart Town. It originally spanned over two acres, and some 50,000 male convicts passed through the complex. Following the cessation of convict transportation, the site became Hobart Gaol for more than 100 years. Sections of the chapel were converted into two Supreme Courts connected by tunnels to the gaol. An execution yard and gallows were added.

About The Ghosts of Nothing
(aka Sean Lowry and Ilmar Taimre)
seek to illustrate that the omnivorous voraciousness inherent in the world of a work of art is also evident in the world of a rock band. From trashed motel rooms to legendary music venues and fictional mythologies, the conceptual complex of a rock band is capable of accommodating an entire universe of non-musical objects, events and places.

Within this project, a pseudo-rock band becomes a conceptual vehicle through which activities performed by a diverse range of perceptual objects (including embodied events) enable the work to be experienced and conceived of as coterminous with its own constantly evolving world—a world of material/immaterial relationships, intermedial translations, deliberate mistranslations, and accidents of circumstance.

Proof of Life

Curated by Elizabeth Woods and Kevin Leong as part of The Homesickness Project

Proof of Life will present diverse works developed during the Studio Sessions as part of Ten Days On The Island 2017. Many works are based on participatory community partnerships, and include a selection of new and existing works taking the form of video, photographic and 3D works.

Featuring artists Lisa Garland, Paul Gazzola, Laura Purcell, Elizabeth Woods, Kevin Leong, Abdul Hakim Hashemi Hamidi, Dalibor Martinis, Daphne Keramidas, James Newitt, Nick Leitch, Peta Cook, Leigh Hobba, and Hussen Ibraheem and Ameen Nayfeh.

An artistic collaboration between Sean Lowry and Ilmar Taimre, The Ghosts of Nothing have embarked on a series of imagined and mime-based performances within the conceptual architecture of a 'world tour' of a 'rock opera' titled In Memory of Johnny B Goode remedialised as a 'play' in three acts:

1. World Tour of Abandoned Music Venues 2014 - 2015
2. World Tour of Remote Wilderness 2015 - 2016
3. World Tour of Abandoned Goal-Houses 2016 - 2017

Contemporary Art Tasmania will host the Tasmanian mime-based performance as part of the Ghosts of Nothing: World Tour of Remote Wilderness 2015 - 2016. For this performance the Ghosts of Nothing will collaborate with Laura Purcell.
